In this article we are going to see the songs composed by S.Rajeswara Rao from the movies got released between 1965-1969.
Atma gowravam(1965) , a good family entertainer had ANR, Kanchana, Rajasree were in lead roles with fantastic music by SRR. K.Viswanath debuted as a director through this movie. All songs were by PS in this movie. “Andenu neede andhani jabili”, was composed in a western style using violin bits to enhance the mood of the song. PS rendition is majestic, smooth, sweet and flowing with the music making the audience wonder “Is this song so easy to sing”? Kanchana’s beauty and PS voice matching her in tone is another attraction making it look even more beautiful on screen. “Oka poola banam” is a melodious duet by PS,GS picturised on Kanchana and ANR.PAruvamu ponge is another duet picturized on Rajasree and ANR. "Preminchanide" is a light number by PS-GS for Rajasree-ANR. “Mundati valenaa pai” a kshetrayya krithi is a semi classical dance number by PS with Kanchana as Gopika and Rajasree as Krishna. "Brathuke netitho", a pathos number for kanchana was rendered with emotion conveying the feelings of a forsaken lover by PS. “Valapulu virisina”, is another beautiful western tune adopted by SRR for a duet. As usual PS,GS are unmatched in their brilliance while rendering a duet, with correct proportions of expressions.
I also thank Mr.Sriram Lakshman for his valuable comments.

“Dorikithe Dongalu” had NTR, Jamuna in lead roles with great music by SRR. “Sri venkatesa EEsa” is a wonderful devotional on Lord venkateswara rendered by PS (Jamuna), Balamurali Krishna(Gummadi) and Vasantha (Vasanthi). “Yeguruthunnadi” is a melodious duet by PS-GS for NTR,Jamuna. “Yevaranarevi kannulani”, is a superb duet rendered aesthetically by PS and Ghantasala. “Yevariki theliyadhule yuvakula sangathi” is a teasing number by PS. She renders it playfully with a jovial temperament.
Bhaktha Pothana(1966), based on the life of popular saint and poet had Gummadi (Pothana), SVR(Srinadha kavi) and Padmini (a courtesan) in lead roles. Some popular numbers of PS include “Karthika deepamai”, Ninne korenecheliya”,”Sravana meghalu”, “NAgaraja kanya” and sarva mangala nama”.
Mohini Bhasmasura (1966) had SVR, padmini in the roles of bhasmasura and Mohini. It had scintillating music by SRR with almost 9 songs rendered by PS with unmatched brilliance! Padmini’s dance, PS voice and SRR music turned this movie into a total classic! PS rendered all the numbers in a pleasing, enchanting and seductive way without overdoing it as she is singing for the character of “Mohini” trying to entice bhasmasura. Some numbers have “nature” associated in them like “Konda konalo”, “Oh neeta naaneeda”netc and the rest being tough with a classical touch ( Vijayamidhigo , Paadali madi aadali, nenu nene suma, teeyanaina oohala, Idhi yemito maya, Prashantamae nisheedamu). She never loses that “FEEL” necessary in the songs.
PS fan Sriram Lakshman comments: Her good vocal control can sing each note distinctly for the intended musical effect in a melody or harmony
Teeyanaina oohala .. I have played this song to several North Indians who are not parochial and they swear that none else could have done justice to this. A good friend of mine Sanjeev Ramabadhran, settled in the US and a prodigy too stated that this was a slice of "impossible" singing. Sanjeev is doing a Radio program on "Rare gems of South Indian Film Music" and has promised me that this will be featured too. Each one of them marveled at the ease first and then the unmistakable clarity in each of the gamaks. All these Bhajan singers who come on TV and harp on the so called "challenging" songs they have sung first need to hang their heads in utter shame. Each of the 5 songs composed for Mohini to entice Bhasmasura is a gem.
Prasanthame nisheedamu : (Mohini Bhasmasura) Yet another instance of Mohini trying to entice Bhasmasura. Extended passages on the violin dotted with taps on the vibraphone bring through this ethereal feel of the other worldly surreal damsel wafting through the skies . With Saluru, violins come through with a sort of resonance never heard before and as if a packet of air is blown through them as well.....all owing to the fact that he segues in the flute as well atop the violins. Amid all this, the songstress temptingly invites, persuasively beckons, with a mocking plaint grabs the blood thirsty Asura's attention remaining melodious all through. Well....in the charanams, the very second line "vinotha bhava geethilo nAdhamai" grabbed my attention for sure for the delectable release of the word "nAdhamai" the first time around and that needs to be refrigerated and preserved in cotton wool. "Jagamanthata Nadhamayam" ( Sangeetha lakshmi) Last time around it was a carnival of the "Raja Malayasimhan" kind. Now its a classical carnival spun out by the maverick genius Saluru Rajeswara Rao...and delivered by the pair that still remains a most important aspect of the Telugu culture itself. This is a Yaman fest, rip-roaring akarams, swarams and the teaser of a melody would keep one enthralled eternally. Supremely addictive singing by the duo. I will simply let their voices "speak" for themselves.......usage of any word would be the equivalent of a child just about learning to totter around trying to reach out to the latch at the top end of a 7 foot door. Brilliant is the least one could..........The composition itself has inspired Shankar (of the Shankar Jaikishen fame) to create "rE man sur mein gA" in "lal pathhar". Shankar was quite aware of the developments happening in the Telugu Music Industry being a naturalized Andhraite, naturalized enough to create "Ramayya vastavayya" in Shri 420. Deep gratitude..........Many thanks..Master gaaru and Gana kokila...pranams to Saluru....
Palanati Yuddham(1966), a historical drama is a morbid story similar to that of Mahabharatha. It was a basically a battle between brothers Nalagamaraju (Rajanala) and his step brother malideva due to rivalry created between them by some vested interests ( minister nagamma played by bhanumati) thereby leading to destruction, agony and loss of lives. NTR plays the role of Bhramanaidu, minister and Anjali his wife. Jamuna plays the role of daughter in law (Manchala) of bhramanaidu and Harnath his son (balachandrudu). kantha rao plays the role of brother of malideva(Alaraju) who is killed by suspicious means and vasanthi his wife(Peramma) who commits suicide(sati) after coming to know of the death of her husband. PS sang 5 songs in the movie 1) Nidurekaruvaye with SJ, a pathos where both Jamuna(PS) and Vasanthi(SJ) are concerned about their husbands who are fighting in the battlefield. They are not sure if they will see them again. PS does full justice to her song rendering it soulfully. 2)Seela mookala vari is a light song, a beautiful duet with balamurali krishna for Jamuna and Harnath. 3)Rati raja sundara, a padhyam cum song where Manchala(Jamuna) sends her husband to battlefield applying veera tilakam on his forehead. PS sings this with rajasam in her voice, befitting that of a queen filled with patriotism and valor. Fantastic number. Other songs by PS include bangaruthalli, and ramante raavemira.
Sangeetha Lakshmi (1966), a musical hit is a story of two professional singers played by NTR and Jamuna who get married and then separate due to some issues. Their daughter who is also a budding artiste gets them together in the end. Some excellent numbers include classics like “Paataku pallavi pranam” with Ghantasala ( a semi classical number rendered wonderfully), “Raasa krida eka chaalu” , a competitive song between mother and daughter sung by PS and SJ. Paapa papa is a lullaby by PS and GS and kalayonijamo is another melodious duet.PS also sang many padhyams in this movie. "Jagamantahata Nadamayam" is a outstanding number.

Chilaka gorinka(1967) had 3 numbers by PS(nadu nadu, papa kadhu (with ghantasala) and yerupukeni).
AVM’s Bhaktha Prahaladha(1967)(same name in tamil) is another milestone under PS-SRR combination. This movie was dubbed in Kannada and Hindi with the same names. There are absolutely no words to describe PS incredible performance. It is again multi tasking for PS. She renders bhakthi songs(Narayana mantram, kanulaku veluguvu, jeevamu neeve, aadhukovayya, namo narasimha (with balamurali), padhyamas (chadivinchiri, mandara makarandha, neela sarira, indhu kaladu etc from pothana bahgavatham) for 6 year old Roja ramani(role of prahaladha),a folk number “komma meedhi” for vanisree, "andhani sura seema" along with SJ and soolamangalam for apsaras Rambha, Urvashi, menaka and tilotamma(jayasree, venniradai nirmala, vijayalalitha and geetanjali). She also renders another semi classical dance number Raa ra priya sundara for L.Vijayalakshmi. It is amazing to listen to PS rendition of a few lines of vedas in the movie (when Prahladha learns it from his teachers). PS never mimicked or changed her voice for the child character unlike other singers who use mimicry to suit different characters. Her rendition was pure and natural just like the cool waters of fresh water lake quenching the thirst of listeners. The lip sync is so perfect for roja ramani that the viewer will end up thinking it is prahaladha who is singing all the numbers! SRR used the same potana bhagavatha padhyams from Chenchu Lakshmi(1956) in bhaktha prahaladha(1967) and PS sang for the child character prahaladha in both the movies. Yet, when we compare both, the songs and padhyams sound evergreen, pleasant and delightful to hear in both the versions. She is truly a gandharva gaayani!
Poola rangadu(1967)(pagadai rangan in tamil) had ANR,Jamuna, Sobhan,Vijayanirmala in lead roles. It had exemplary music by SRR.As usual melody queen PS renders all the numbers flawlessly and excellently. “Neevu raavu nidura raavu”is a wonderful sitar based number by PS which a total classic and must listen number. "Chigurulu vesina kalalanni" with KVK Mohanraju (sobhan, vijayanirmala) is another good melody. Missamissalade chinnadana (Jamuna,ANR) and Nee jilugu paita are duets with ghantasala. PS surprises the listeners with a complete folk slang in “Yeira sinnodu yeira”. Another song "Inara Bharatha veera" is a Burrakatha and type of Stage Drama. Overall an excellent album for music lovers.
Raktha sindooram(1967) had sobhan and rajasree in lead roles.PS sang about 5 numbers like allibilli pillara, po bokuma, yemo anukuna etc(a few duets with ghantasala).
B.N.Reddys classic Rangula ratnam(1967) had great tunes composed by SRR. PS in her nightingale voice rendered “Kanarani devude”, “Koyila koyani pilichinadi", "kanula dagina anuragam" and ragasudha rasa. “Kanarani devude” exposes the sweetness and nectar like voice of PS. Such a pleasant rendition which makes listeners spellbound. Truly an adorable number.Similar is the case with all the other numbers. Totally melodious!
ANRs Sudigundalu(1967) was an offbeat film relating to social issues. She rendered sumati shatakam(akaraku raani), vinara sodhara(independence story and a padhyam "mayamambe jagambu" . The songs are of a different genre and PS excels!
Vasanthasena(1967) had 3 numbers by PS(eduru choosina, yemi evvagaladu, kilaila nagavula), all melodious numbers.
Veeranjaneya(1968) had 5 numbers by PS( telupuma chandamama, yendani yeruganu, neelala ningilo, inthakaina madhuramaina, manasaina dhananura)- all classics.
Aatmeeyulu(1969) is one more superhit musical under the combination of SRR-PS. Starring ANR,Vanisree, Chandrakala, Vijayanirmala and chandramohan in main roles, PS was the lead singer for all the three artistes. Who could forget Madhilo veenalu mroge (Chandrakala and vanisree) . To me, this is like a competition between PS and the veena . Which one is more sweeter and melodious? It is hard to differentiate because the voice and the instrument totally blend together creating an aura of peace and harmony lifting the listener to a completely different world! Wonderful number! (Tidbit: PS was not satisfied with her rendition even though she took many takes. The last but one was okayed by SRR and told her that one couldn’t do better than that. But PS insisted on one more take and that is the final outcome that we hear now! Everyone in the recording room were mesmerized!
PS fan sriram Lakshman: The sheer undiluted class, a voice that sails through notes like a knife slides through a butter cuboid, the silken comfort and sangathis that roll out screaming out their allegiance to the greatest singer Hindustani film music has ever housed....all that is on show here. I played the video several times but I am unable to recall a single image as the voice threw other cognitive apparatuses out of the window, my eyes watched as if in a stupor, registering nothing whereas the ears lapped it all up and hanker for more out of sheer greed. Tremendous, implicit expressions, lodge themselves out of the mouth watering desire to be a part of the song experience. The throw at "madilo" each time it is sung out, each time with a subtly different gamak and feelingly imparted curve to "mroge" should be preserved within the confines of the sensitive heart for eternity. Now you have all that and Saluru and the raaga Mohana brimming with sringara ras, what else one could do other than allowing oneself to be sucked in and enjoying the unadulaterated bliss. After listening PS's rendition of "Madilo Veenalu" song, SRRAO moved with tears. The emotion which he wanted to bring was brought by PS in her singing it seems.
"Swagatham oho" is another hit song for Vanisree. It is song in lighter vein where the heroine tries to woo the hero.PS sings it in a mischevious mood filled with playfulness and fun. "Chamanthi yemete" is a beautiful duet with Ghantasala while "chilipi navvula" is a duet with SPB. In this song PS sings for both the characters vijayanirmala and chandrakala proving her versatility again. "Kallalo pelli" is a very beautiful tune composed by SRR and sung by PS,Ghantasala. As usual a perfect duet! "Amma baboi nammaradhu" is a teasing duet by PS,GS where the hero and heroine playfully poke fun at each other’s gender and their weaknesses. "Annaiah kalale" is a brother-sister relationship song usually heard during rakhee festival times in vividh bharathi. A beautiful song by PS and Ghantasala. "Ee rojulo" is another well rendered duet by PS,Ghantasala which is women centric number (trying to show how women have changed ).
Adarsha kutumbam(1969) was a message oriented film which highlighted the concept for smaller families rather than joint family system. ANR,Jayalalitha, Anjali,S.Varalakshmi played major roles. All songs were by PS once again! "Bidiyamela O cheli" is a Shanti muhurtham song well rendered by PS+GS. "Hello saaru" is a competition song between hero and heroine and PS,GS convey the mood necessary in the song. "Aire choostavera" is a variety folk dance song for PS for the masses and does a neat job of it. "Cheyi cheyi kalipi" is a duet by PS,GS with a social message with focus mainly on farmers trying to motivate them. "Kalagajja gangalamma" is a traditional folk number by PS.
Maamaku thagga kodallu (1969) had several songs by PS like “Happy birthday to you”, manasaina raja, kanulu musukoni etc, all well rendered.
Let’s end the 60s with the last film Dharma patni(1969). PS had 2 numbers- naadu ninnu choosanu –a duet with SPB and thalivi neevenamma – a solo , all well rendered.
