Celelstial Songs Of Upanishad - A Must Listen Album By P. Susheela





About the Album :

It is with a Profound sense of joy and anticipation that I present to you this recording — the first 
one on the Upanisads. The enthusiastic listener "acceptance of my earlier productions on the
 Vedas and the Bhagavad-Gita emboldens me to attempt the recording of the Upanisads. 

The Word» “Ullanisad” literally means “sitting down at the feet of the teacher”. That is to say, the Upanishads embody the secret and sacred teachings which were imparted by the Guru to his disciples. 'I'hese teaching of cource were about the nature of Ultimate Reality 
"lwentieth-century man looks outward to the conquest of outer space. But the seers and sages of the Upanisads looked inward to the conquest of inner space. They believed that the Soul of man was as infinite as the vast expanse of the limitless Universe. They_ believed also that the individual Self ot Jivatma, partakes of the character of the Obsolute self‘, or Paramatma. The goal and purpose of human life is to let our individual Selves dissolve into that Ocean of Truth, Consciousness, and Bliss which the obsolute is, and thus experience the Peace that passeth all understanding, which the mystics of alla ages and all faiths affirm is vouchsafed to the true seeker. 
Modern Criticism is generally agreed that these Upanishads,  numbering 108, belong to the period
earlier than the first millennium before Christ. As almost all the early literature of India was
anonymous, we do not know the names of the authors of these Upanisads. According to. tradition,
the great sage, Vyasa, was the first compiler of the Vedas, and the compilation of the Upan-isads remains a matter of speculation. Of theoriginal number only about a dozen and a half, which are considered
the principal Upanisads, are still extant.


The Upanisads are considered part of Sruti that which was “heard” as the revealed Word of God.
We do not, however, possess any 1’9C91’d Of how these words of the Upanishads, pregnant with potency and words  with luminosity, were chanted, and to What
 meter they were set for incantation by the sages
themselves.


But since they are known to Produce powerful vibrations, induce a tranquil state of mind, and
summon a beatific vision of the Absolute, I have engaged the mellifluous voice of Srimati P. Susheela
to render them in song. The devotion with which she has done this is certain to enable you to
experience the ecstasy of having communion with the Ineffable.

In this day and age, when we crave for peace in the world, peace with nature, peace with all
mankind, and peace with ourselves, I offer this recording as my humble salutation to the sages
of the Upanisads, who made them replete with the invocation:
OM, SHANTHI, SI-lANTHl, SI-lANTHI

Let there be Peace, Peace, Peace.



About the Vocalist : 

South India's most celebrated singer of film and semi-classical music is being introduced to audiences abroad through this recording. Srimati P. Susheela who has rendered these sacred songs of the Upanisads, obtained her initial training in Vijayawada from the well-known violinist  Dwaram Venkatasamy Naidu. Subsequently in Madras She received further Training from the renowned Musiri Subramanya Iyer. 

Commencing her singing career in South Indian films in 1951, While she was still in her teens, Srimati Susheela has sung more than 20,000 songs. She is the leading Singer of South India, and has sung in several Indian languages- The foundation of rigor and discipline having been laid by her teachers, she has developed her talent With the aid of her own creative imagination and personal intuition. It is these qualities which were decisive in her being chosen to render the Upanisads.

Before she did the actual recording, Srimati Susheela diligently studied the Upanisads with the
asistance of an eminent Sanskrit scholar. The recipient year after year, of many coveted awards,
too numerous to catalog, she is married to Dr. Mohan Rao, and has a son twelve years old.

The Composer - Director

A pioneer in introducing North American audiences to the rich treasures of India’s music and 
dance, Rangasami Parthasarathy has been widely acclaimed as much for teaching, promoting and staging concerts in all the major centers, as for his own performance and direction.

He has founded the Academy of East Indian Arts in New York in 1971, and has directed it with a view to making it an effective instrument to attain his objective.

          In recognition of his sterling contribution to the enrichment of Indian ethnicity in North America, Parthasaratliy was given the Award for the Perfonning Arts by the First Convention of Asian Indians in 1980.

With the intention of reaching much wider audiences than those of concert halls, Parthasarathy has founded his own recording company, ORIENTAL RECORDS in 1977, to bring to them the infinite variety of Indian music, both sacred and secular. It has been his singular mtisfaction that all the leading vocalists and instrumentalists of both the Northern and Southem traditions of Indian music have recorded under his company’s label.

Now more than ever, Parthasarathy senses the role music can play in creating the atmosphere for the reception of the message of Peace as a new  century dawns.

Ananda Dhandavam - P.Susheela’s Mesmerizing Cosmic Masterpiece

After the amazing success of K.Balachander’s “Sindhu Bhairavi”, a movie comparing the Carnatic Classical style of music with Folk in Tamil, many movies were attempted on similar genre. Among these, a few were successful too. In this article we are going to explore the musical richness of a rare and excellent movie called “Ananda Thandavam” based entirely on the Carnatic Style of Music. It had exemplary music by L.Vaidyanathan. However the true element of surprise and happiness springs out for all P.Susheela Fans when we come to know that she was the “SOLO” singer (single title card) for the entire movie and handled the responsibility of rendering more than 22 songs with ease. Let’s go ahead with a detailed analysis.
“Tāṇḍavam”is a divine dance performed by the Hindu god Shiva. ... While the Rudra Tandava depicts his violent nature, as the destroyer of the universe, even of death itself; the Ananda Tandava depicts him as enjoying himself in the process of creation.




        A few words about the director: L.Vaidyanathan, hailing from Yazhpanam , was a musical genius and had in depth knowledge of both the Carnatic as well as western style of music. He was also a violin Vidwan or expert and worked as a MD for Tamil films like “Yezhavathu manithan”, “Pesum Padam”, “Marupakkam” etc and also for a few Kannada films as well. Apart from that, he used to assist various other music director’s too. He was instrumental in adding a new dimension to Bharathiyar’s songs and never failed to experiment with new ideas unlike other MD’s who just stuck to their style (not wanting to risk). Violin maestro L.Subramanyam is his brother.
Now let’s listen to an inspiring bharathiyar composition under PS, Vaidyanathan combination:

     After listening to “Ananda Thandavam album”, we also get a similar gist of happiness and bliss as we listen to the brilliant rendition of P.Susheela in a more pure Carnatic style. The lyrics have a strong spiritual content which raises one to a higher level of ecstasy , devotion and self -introspection.

The disc for “Anandha Thandavam” movie was released in 1986 and it was totally and purely Carnatic classical music in nature (without any other influence). L.Vaidyanathan wanted PS to render all the 22 songs in this album and so used to come to her house every day to give special training to make it possible. It is really heartwarming to learn of such incidents where there was so much passion, dedication and hard work involved in the mindsets of MD’s and singers to provide the right output and ones who never compromised on quality. This movie was translated into 5 languages and P.Susheela was the main and solo singer in all these too which is a feat by itself.



   We have collections of these songs in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, but couldn’t find info about the rest. It could either be in Kannada or Malayalam. I am not sure if the movie was ever released in theatres and as a result, this vast rich treasure of music was hidden without a trace. As PS fans, we should do something about it so that such rare gems don’t get lost! It’s true that these songs may not be appealing to masses because of Carnatic style, but true ardent lovers of classical music could take part in preserving this album. “Mohanam sringara kaviya thandavam”, “Asaiye madha yanai”,”Omkara Oliyodu”,”Aatmajyothi ye”,”Gunamedhum elladha mukkanan sivan” - Each and every song is an exception by itself. The lyrics for Tamil version was penned by Vaali and these songs should be heard atleast once by patrons of Carnatic music to enjoy the flavor.
